{"id":461,"date":"2016-07-14T17:06:55","date_gmt":"2016-07-14T21:06:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pjgardner.com\/travel3\/?p=461"},"modified":"2016-08-07T02:18:02","modified_gmt":"2016-08-07T06:18:02","slug":"july-14-nanortalik","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pjgardner.com\/travel3\/2016\/07\/14\/july-14-nanortalik\/","title":{"rendered":"July 14: Nanortalik"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_471\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-471\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-471\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pjgardner.com\/travel3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/20160714_Nanortalik-Church-View-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Nanortalik Church View\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pjgardner.com\/travel3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/20160714_Nanortalik-Church-View-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.pjgardner.com\/travel3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/20160714_Nanortalik-Church-View.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 85vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-471\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nanortalik Church View<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We woke up to dense fog in Nanortalik, our second stop on the west coast of Greenland and only about half the size of Qaqortoq. \u00a0It was the kind of fog that made everything soaking wet without rain.\u00a0 It was also pretty chilly (36 F, 2 C).\u00a0 Again, we had to be transported to shore with a tender.\u00a0 This time that service was pretty slow because of the fog.\u00a0 They had to make sure not to run into each other, or to an ice berg, of which there were several in the harbor.\u00a0 There was a wait of more than an hour to go ashore.\u00a0 By then the fog had started to lift and it became sunny and warmer and very pleasant for our time on shore.\u00a0 This time I wandered into the outskirts of town.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_476\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-476\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-476\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pjgardner.com\/travel3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/20160714_Rotterdam-Tenders-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Rotterdam Tenders in Nantoralik\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pjgardner.com\/travel3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/20160714_Rotterdam-Tenders-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pjgardner.com\/travel3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/20160714_Rotterdam-Tenders-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pjgardner.com\/travel3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/20160714_Rotterdam-Tenders.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-476\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rotterdam Tenders in Nantoralik<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When I had left most of the cruise crowd behind, I ran into a woman walking along the shore.\u00a0 She asked: \u201cAre you from the cruise ship?\u201d and I answered \u201cIsn\u2019t everybody?\u201d to which she responded \u201cWell, I\u2019m not!\u201d\u00a0 She was a visiting nurse from Denmark, Greenland\u2019s \u201cmother country\u201d.\u00a0 I had an interesting conversation with her about health care.\u00a0 She had just helped evacuate one of the residents by helicopter.\u00a0 (Helicopters come and go all day in both towns).\u00a0 Nanortalik has a hospital with ten beds.\u00a0 Overflow patients or more complex problems go to the larger facility in Qaqortoq.\u00a0 Specialized treatments are flown to Greenland\u2019s capital, Nuuk, and on rare occasions to Denmark.\u00a0 Helicopters are the only ambulances in Greenland.\u00a0 There are no roads and most towns have no airport, only helipads.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_474\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-474\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-474\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pjgardner.com\/travel3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/20160714_Nanortalik-Helicopter-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Nanortalik Helicopter\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pjgardner.com\/travel3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/20160714_Nanortalik-Helicopter-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pjgardner.com\/travel3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/20160714_Nanortalik-Helicopter-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pjgardner.com\/travel3\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/20160714_Nanortalik-Helicopter.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-474\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nanortalik Helicopter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We just left Nanortalik for St John\u2019s, Newfoundland, Canada.\u00a0 The new world!\u00a0 So far, the ocean has been rather placid, except for our first day on the North Sea.\u00a0 The captain announced that it may get a little rougher tomorrow, with rain, a stiff breeze, and seas up to eight feet.
