class=\"wp-caption-text\">St. John&#8217;s, Newfoundland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After once again waking up to a cold fog, when we approached St. John\u2019s, Newfoundland, the weather began to clear and we actually had a sunny day, and one of the hottest Newfoundland had had for a long time, according to a local caf\u00e9 barista.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_496\" id=\"caption-attachment-496\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St. John&#8217;s Houses<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>St. John\u2019s has a remarkable natural harbor.\u00a0 Deep and very sheltered, with two high hills standing guard at the harbor\u2019s entrance.\u00a0 One of those is Signal Hill, where Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless telegraph transmission in 1901.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_498\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-498\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-498\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tower on Signal Hill, St. John&#8217;s<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We docked at noon.\u00a0 P.J and I had a shore excursion that was supposed to start then but because of a delay by Canadian immigration to clear our ship, we were more than a half hour late getting started.\u00a0 Although the tour director tried her best, it gave the trip a hurried pace.\u00a0 We first went to Cape Spear, the most eastern point of North America.\u00a0 There was a large pod of whales swimming by. \u00a0But, alas, we had a schedule to keep.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_490\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cape Spear Lighthouse<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When we reached Signal Hill, P.J and I decided to leave the tour and hike down to the city, about an hour.\u00a0 It is one of the most spectacular trails I\u2019ve ever been on.\u00a0 Starting at the top of the hill, it winds down over the rocks below that jut out into the ocean, with gorgeous views of the jagged Newfoundland coast line.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_492\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-492\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"caption-attachment-492\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Staircase on Signal Hill Coastal Walk<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The perfect summer weather helped a lot.\u00a0 The trail then turns in towards the harbor along the near virtual rock wall at the harbor\u2019s entrance.\u00a0 The path is very well engineered, with lots of wooden walkways and bridges over crevasses.\u00a0 At one point there\u2019s a narrow ledge but a chain along the rock face made that easy too.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_494\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-494\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-494\" id=\"caption-attachment-494\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coastal Walk in St. John&#8217;s<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We sailed out of the harbor while we were having dinner near the panoramic windows of the dining room.\u00a0 There we saw humpback whales everywhere!\u00a0 A few came pretty close to the ship.\u00a0 The plumes from their blow holes made the ocean look like a geyser basin.\u00a0 Earlier, at Cape Spear, I had seen several whales breaching, not close by but still impressive.\u00a0 Our tour leader told us the number of them was enough to make the local news. \u00a0The estimate was about 25 whales, but it seemed more to me.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_497\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-497\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img
